With fall sports officially over in Lexington County, all eyes are on the court as the winter sports season hits its stride. Last week, many of the area’s best athletes performed well as they tried to get their teams wins before the winter break.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchonicle.com.

Yasir Cromer

River Bluff basketball star Yasir Cromer is having a great start to the season and helped the Gators bounce back from a three-game losing streak with a win over Blythewood.

The senior scored 34 points as the Gators won their rematch over the Bengals. It was a career-high for Cromer and set a school record for points in a game.

Cromer has been one of the county’s best players to start the year. He already has multiple 20 and 30-point games and the Gators are only eight games into their season.

River Bluff will have one game this week before winter break. Then the team will participate in holiday tournaments like many other teams around Lexington. This will allow Cromer to showcase his skills against different competition.

Michaela Fairwell

Dutch Fork basketball senior Michaela Fairwell is picking up where she left off last season, putting up big numbers on both sides of the court.

Fairwell helped the Silver Foxes win two games last week and improve to 7-0. In both of those games, she stuffed the stat sheet.

Against A.C. Flora, Fairwell finished with 15 points, seven assists and five steals. In a win over Spring Valley, she had 20 points, five assists and eight steals.

Fairwell and the Silver Foxes will be in action three times this week and will try to improve on their already hot start.
