LEXINGTON COUNTY BLOWFISH ACTION

Beating the Macon Bacon top priority for the Blowfish

Posted

There’s plenty for the Lexington County Blowfish to smile about these days.

Since the return of fans to Lexington County Baseball Stadium, the team have played near-unbeatable baseball at home. They are 8-1 since July 16 and 11-2 overall for the season at the friendly confines.

The Blowfish (13-6, 3-6) are a perfect 9-0 in the Lake Murray Cup Series, are 2-0 against the Catawba Valley Stars and had a winning record against the front-running Savannah Bananas entering Tuesday’s road contest.

If there was just 1 thing to spoil the sunny days for the Blowfish, it’s the dark cloud known as the Macon Bacon.

The Georgia franchise is the only team Lexington County has not defeated this season.

Add the 2 losses last season the the Blowfish have dropped their last 6 meetings to the Bacon. If the Blowfish have any hope of catching both Savannah and Macon in the standings, it must reverse its losing ways to the Bacon.

The Blowfish had an opportunity to rectify that issue Wednesday at home. Macon was making its 2nd visit to the stadium looking to extend its winning streak in Lexington to 4 straight dating back to last season.

Wednesday began the Blowfish’s longest homestand of the season with 6 straight and 10 of the next 12 in Lexington.

With games Wednesay against the Bacon and Monday against the Bananas, this is a grand opportunity for the Blowfish to make up ground with 2 weeks left in the season.

WIDENER MAKES HISTORY

The Lexington County Blowfish now have official representation in Major League Baseball.

University of South Carolina pitcher Taylor Widener made his big league debut on July 25 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He threw 1 pitch against the San Diego Padres which resulted in a flyout by Ty France to leftfield, during which Tommy pham was doubled off at 1st base for another out.

Widener threw 1 2/3 innings in his debut, he walked 1 and struck out 1. During his 1 season with the Blowfish in 2015, Widener had a 2.53 ERA with 43 strikeouts and was named a Coastal Plain League All-Star. He is the 1st Lexington County Blowfish to appear in MLB and 5th overall in the team’s history.
