Lexington County's clerk of council has been fired

Posted

Lexington County has fired one of its more visible employees.

On April 5, Lexington County Council voted to terminate Brittany Shumpert from her position as clerk of council.

The vote was unanimous, apart from Scott Whetstone, who abstained for what he stated were personal reasons.

The decision came after council went into executive session to discuss the “discipline or release of an employee,” according to the meeting agenda.

Council Chair Beth Carrigg stated that Shumpert’s firing was “effective immediately.”

Reached by the Chronicle, the chair declined decoment, saying  the county doesn't comment on employee matters.

No reason has been announced for Shumpert’s dismissal, and no word has been given about what the process to find her replacement will look like.

According to information posted to Shumpert’s LinkedIn page, which is no longer active, she had served as clerk since 2019.

As the clerk, Shumpert organized council meetings, prepared agendas and supplementary documents, and helped relay information about council’s actions to the public.

The Chronicle reached out to Carrigg and Whetstone for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
