Lexington High School student accused of threatening fellow students

Posted

A student at Lexington High School is accused of making direct threats against fellow students on May 18.

The student, whom a release from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department notes will not be identified because they are under 18, “exhibited behavior that concerned a fellow student.”

Capt. Adam Myrick, public information officer with the department, told the Chronice they  couldn't provide a specific number of students who were threatened but it was "more than a handful."

"The student who became concerned could have absolutely been affected by the potential actions of the accused," Myrick said.

The accused student was transported for holding at the state Department of Juvenile Justice and will appear at a later date in Lexington County Family Court.

In a message shared with Lexington High families, Principal Ryan Pool emphasized that there was no credible threat to the school.

“Be assured, however, that all reports are taken seriously and those who engage in threatening or disruptive behavior will receive severe consequences from both the school and our law enforcement partners,” the principal writes.

Per Pool’s message, the student who made the threats has been suspended and recommended for expulsion, in line with Lexington County School District 1 policy.

In his note, the principal praises the actions of the student who brought the concerning behavior to school administrators’ attention.

“We are proud of our students who consistently demonstrate that they understand the importance of school safety and report safety concerns to an adult at our school,” Pool writes.

The message details that school administrators, school resource officers and district security personnel worked quickly to locate the accused student and investigate.

“Our team quickly determined that there was no immediate threat to our school, and we worked with additional officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department throughout the day on the investigation,” Pool writes.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
