Lexington Post 7 selects senior roster for summer baseball

The sights and sounds synomynous with the “Boys of Summer” were heard again in Chapin.

For the 1st time in 3 months, the game of baseball was played on a Chronicle Country field. The location was Melvin Park where Lexington Post 7 held the 1st of 3 days of tryouts for its junior and senior teams.

An estimated 60 players competed for roster sports on the teams which will compete in the S.C. American Summer League.

The fledgling organization will include several teams who would have played American Legion baseball this summer had it not cancelled the season due to covid-19.

Lexington Post 7, Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24 West Columbia Post 79 and Richland Post 125 are among the Summer League participants. The season is expected to run from June 26 to July 31 and playoffs will take place Aug. 3-16.

Lexington will play their home games at Ball ark Road, which will be open for activities starting June 15.

“It feels great,” Lexington Post 7 head coach Michael Riefsynder said. “We were real worried we wouldn’t be able to see the field and it’s a great opportunity to be able to get out with these kids and, hopefully, be the 1st baseball to be happening soon.”

Riefsynder is especially excited for those senior players who saw their final seasons in high school cut short due to school closures. It’s an opportunity to make up for the lost time for some and others to get back in playing shape before college.

All American Summer League players must submit a waiver/release form for communicable diseases, including covid-19. Riefsynder also plans to take other precautions such as social distancing and keeping a log tracking the temperatures of players.
