Man dies in I-26 construction accident in Lexington County

A man died in a construction accident along Interstate 26 in Lexington County.

The county Coroner’s Office reports that Ramon Ortiz-Medina, 24 of Columbia, died in the accident that happened at about 11:15 p.m. on April 14 near the 130 mile marker of the eastbound portion of the interstate.

That spot is between Exits 129 (U.S. Highway 21) and 136 (S.C. Highway 6) near Swansea and Gaston, about 40 miles from downtown Lexington.

In a post to Facebook, the coroner's office states that Ortiz-Medina died “due to injuries sustained by heavy equipment,” adding that the accident remains under investigation with an autopsy scheduled for April 17 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Work is ongoing to widen 1-26 between Exits 125 and 136 in Lexington and Calhoun counties, according to the state Department of Transporation website.

DOT didn’t immediately respond to the Chronicle’s request for comment.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
