It’s win or go home time for teams around Lexington County as the spring sports postseason continues to heat up.
With their backs against the wall, many local athletes stepped up and delivered a big performance to help their teams live to fight another day. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners play for Dutch Fork and led their teams to the next round.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
Dutch Fork soccer’s Wyatt Moore helped the Silver Foxes advance to the second round of the 5A Division I soccer playoffs after a 3-1 win over Rock Hill.
Moore scored twice against the Bearcats to lead his team in scoring. He has led his team in scoring all season, averaging 1.4 goals per game.
The freshman’s first varsity season came to an end in the second round of the playoffs against region rival Lexington. The Wildcats and Silver Foxes split their regular-season series, but Lexington forced a shutout in their final meeting to win the game that mattered most.
Moore still has three years of eligibility to improve and help lead the Silver Foxes back to the playoffs.
Dutch Fork softball’s Haley Alderman gave the Silver Foxes a big boost as the team faced elimination.
In a tie game against Wade Hampton, Alderman stepped up to the plate and nailed a ball to left field, scoring three runs to put Dutch Fork up 4-1. The Silver Foxes scored one more run later in the game and held on for a 5-1 victory to avoid elimination.
Alderman is a four-year varsity player and has seen increased action over the years. The senior extended her Silver Fox career by at least one game and got her team closer to the district bracket title match with the win.
Dutch Fork’s next game was on Tuesday against Lexington after the Chronicle’s press deadline. The winner of that game advances to the district bracket title match.
