The weather may be cooling down, but the high school sports season is heating up as teams get ready to take on the region portion of their schedules.
Teams lean even more on their stars as the season goes. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners stepped up to help their teams snap losing streaks and get back in the win column.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
Northside Christian quarterback BJ Suits has taken charge of the Crusaders’ offense since becoming the full-time starter.
The junior led the Northside team to its first win of the season in a 30-20 victory over Andrew Jackson Academy. The Crusaders entered that game 0-3, having been outscored 118-18.
Suits did most of his damage from the ground, running for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Northside’s offense exploded for its most points in a game this season and secured the win.
Suits and the Crusaders will look to continue their success this week against Spartanburg Christian.
River Bluff volleyball sophomore Peyton Capps helped the Gators snap a five-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over Westwood.
Capps led the team with eight kills and added a block and two digs. The sophomore has had a solid start to her second varsity campaign. She has four double-digit kill performances this season, including 15 in a win over James Island.
River Bluff succeeds when Capps contributes. In games where she has more than five kills, the team is 9-3. In games where she has less, the Gators are 1-4.
The Gators start conference play this week and will push for a region title after consecutive runner-up seasons.
