Pelion, Lexington senior stars shine, win Athlete of the Week

Posted

Another week of winter sports season has passed as teams from all over Lexington County are competing at a high level.

With the basketball regular season nearing its end, it is important to get as many wins as possible. During these stretches, teams will often turn to their most experienced players to elevate the whole squad.

This week’s Athlete of the Week winners did just that as they used their senior leadership to their advantage.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Kolton Rogers

Pelion’s Kolton Rogers continues to play at a high level and help the Panthers stack wins.

The team began this week (14-3) overall and just snapped a three-game skid, thanks in part to Rogers. The senior had a sizable role last season, but this year he’s playing with even more responsibility.

Rogers is averaging career-highs across the board and is a consistent double-double guy with 18 points and 11 rebounds per game.

Pelion earned its first region win of the season last week after a thrilling matchup with rival Batesburg-Leesville. Rogers scored 28 points in that game, including the go-ahead dunk in the final seconds. He also had eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

The Panthers have six more region games this season, including one on Tuesday after the Chronicle’s press deadline. The team will look to overcome its (0-3) conference start and compete for the region title and favorable postseason positioning.

To make that happen, Pelion will need Rogers to keep up his stellar play.

Sydni Anderson

Lexington center Sydni Anderson is having a career year for the Wildcats.

The senior is averaging a career-high 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks per game. Her play has helped the Wildcats get off to a (16-3) start this season.

Anderson showed up big last week as Lexington earned two crucial conference wins. The team knocked off White Knoll and River Bluff last week to improve to (4-1) in conference for first-place.

In the game against White Knoll, Anderson put up huge numbers, setting a new season-high in points and rebounds. She scored 28 points and added 18 boards.

Lexington is now midway through its region season. Anderson and the Wildcats are in a good position to make a run at the region title if they keep doing what they’re doing.
