Pelion veterans honor fallen heroes at Arlington

Pelion-based American Legion Post 101 members laid a memorial wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Friday, Sept. 25, in Arlington National Cemetery.

The following day, members of Pelion’s American Legion post and fellow Legionnaires washed the Korean War Memorial at Arlington.

Pelion was well-represented at these two events, and attendees said the wreath-laying was a highlight. Each year, the post volunteers to wash a wall, and members alternate between the Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the national cemetery located just outside Washington in Arlington, Virginia.

Participants in the wreath-laying included Post 101 Commander David Mills, Auxiliary Unit 101 President Sarah Mills, Post 101 Vice Commander Bill White and Squadron 101 Commander Gabriel Mills. All four are members of the American Legion Riders motorcycle group.

Thirty-five people took part in the Korean War Memorial washing, along with James Pierce, a park ranger and disabled combat veteran.

Participating groups included Pelion American Legion Post 101 with 14 people; Greenville American Legion Post 3, Chester American Legion Post 27 and Goose Creek American Legion Post 166 with three members each; Dalzel American Legion Post 175 with one member; Murrels Inlet American Legion Post 178 with one member; Chapin American Legion Post 193 with four members; Pelion Girl Scout Troop 3327 with five members; and Pelion Girl Scout Troop 3375 with two members.
