Add another reason to attend Lexington County Blowfish games this season.

The team is very much involved in a race for the 2nd post-season berth out of the Coastal Plain League West Division.

A 5-game winning streak, the longest in league play since 2016, has the Blowfish (17-14, 7-3) within 2 games of 1st place champion and current 2nd half leader the Savannah Bananas. Lexington County visited Grayson Stadium Wednesday for the 1st of 4 meetings in the next 6 games between the 2 teams.

Lexington County is 0-7 this season against the Bananas (26-4). The same is true with other CPL teams who’ve faced Savannah save for Macon, which won 3 times during the 1st half, and Florence, which handed the Bananas their 1st loss of the 2nd half of the season this past Saturday.

Savannah is not the only team Lexington County is chasing. Should the Bananas win the 2nd half of the season, the 2nd Petitt Cup playoff berth goes to the non-division winner with the best overall record.

Currently, the High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms (18-13, 5-3) lead the Blowfish by 1.5 games in the overall standings. The 2 teams do not meet this season.

Another race Lexington County is eying is the Interstate 20 series with Florence. The Blowfish have evened the series at 3-3 with 2 games left this Friday at Lexington County Blowfish Stadium and July 26 in Florence.

Winning close games has been a mantra during the 5-game winning streak. All 5 wins have come by 2 or less runs, with the Blowfish rallying in 3 of them.

This past Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Macon Bacon was the most dramatic. Down 2-1 and having stranded 11 baserunners, the Blowfish got a game-tying RBI squeeze bunt from The Citadel’s Travis Elliott of Gilbert and a walkoff RBI single from Clemson’s Ty Olenchuk of Dutch Fork.

Olenchuk leads the team with a .326 batting average. Fellow Tiger Dylan Brewer trails him by .002, but leads in doubles (10). Michigan State’s Brock Vradenburg leads the team in RBI (21) and Colby Seltzer has a team-high 27 hits and has played in every game this season.
