Yesterday was meningitis awareness day. Meninges are the 3 membranes that cover your brain and spinal cord. Meningitis occurs when fluid surrounding your meninges become infected.
There is viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic meningitis. Each of these have common symptoms.
Some of the symptoms you may experience are:
• discolored rash
• nausea
• vomiting
• sensitivity to light
• fever
• headache
• confusion
• chills
• stiff neck
• sleepiness
Viral and bacterial are the most common. You may get a rash as one of the late symptoms.
While the bacteria is in your blood, it will target cells around the capillaries and cause damage.
As the infection spreads, the rash will worsen.
At higher risk for meningitis are people with injuries, those traveling out of state, adolescents around age 11-12, and college students.
If you haven’t gotten vaccinated for meningitis, you should today. For more information, visit https://www.healthline.com/health/meningitis#treatments .
