Refine your warm-up routine

Summer Golf fun for me is reporting personal golf highlights and here is one that is quite intriguing.

Phil Canders, a Country Club of Lexington member, beat his age by 3 shots recently. The 79-year old had a 76.

When I asked him about his round, he had this to say.

“I hit most of the fairways and chipped and pitched well,” Canders said. “This kind of golf is fun and motivates me.”

Scoring lower than your age is pretty amazing.

In junior golf, Wyatt Harrill of Chapin placed 8th in the overall boys division of the Upstate Juniors in Easley.

Emily Baker of Chapin placed 3rd while Alexis Hodge of Lexington placed 4th at the Grant Bennett Invitational. Harrison James of Chapin placed 6th in the boys 13-14 division, while Gage Gaskins of Batesburg-Leesville placed 9th.

The lesson this week is pretty easy. It requires discipline and patience, but anyone can do it.

The best part is I have never seen this idea studied, then applied and fail. Develop and refine your own personal pre-round warm-up routine.

Take 6-8 minutes before you hit your 1st ball getting both your mind and body ready. 1 of the big mistakes I see amateurs make is swinging at the ball before their body is ready.

This destroys confidence immediately while sabotaging the score early in the round.

The Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commision has junior golf camps running in July, so check their website at icrc.net for details.

On July 25, Grow Golf Now will host a “Girls Only Playing Class”. Check www. growgolfnow.com for details.
