Resuming activities now up to districts

Depending on the respective school districts, S.C. High School League schools were allowed to begin on-campus summer athletic activities as early as Monday.

Commissioner Jerome Singleton of the S.C. High School League released “Guidelines for Return to Play/Practice Team Sports” to its member schools. The information was compiled among a task force of representatives from the league staff, school superintendents, athletics directors and coaches and the SCHSL Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

“The goal is to allow the athletes, coaches, and staff to begin in-person training and group workouts while maintaining a safe environment,” Singleton said in a statement. “ It is imperative that if schools choose to begin implementing Phase 1, they do so under the guidelines set forth.”

Gray Collegiate was 1 of the first schools to reopen its athletic facilities. Districts 1 and 3 announced it will start summer activities for all fall sports on Monday, while Districts 2 and 4 will start June 22.

All schools will operate under Phase 1 of a 3-phased approach. Among the stipulations:

- Maintain minimum physical distancing of 6 feet between participants at all times.

- Daily health screening of athletes, coaches, and staff by a health care professional or designated fulltime district/school employee.

- Temperature screening will be done on each athlete, coach and staff daily by a health care professional or designated fulltime district/school employee. If temperature is equal to or greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, then that individual will not be allowed to stay on site.

- Face coverings that completely cover the nose and mouth are required for everyone.

- No locker room usage and bathroom access limited to every other stall.

- Alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol or adequate hand washing facilities should be provided for all participants.

- No ball used the first 10 days or 14 calendar days.

- Individuals bring own personal water bottle to each workout and not share with anyone.

- Signs posted at entrance alerting all personnel not to enter facility if exposed to someone with covid-19 in past 14 days or exhibit symptoms.
