What makes 2 Gilbert High students successful?

Teacher and family support, time management and positive attitudes.

Monica Martinez and Daniel McGee are the recipients of the 2018-2019 Lexington Peach Festival award that honored the 2-sport athletes with the highest grade point averages.

Martinez says she felt honored.

McGee says he was surprised.

“I didn’t know that I had a high enough GPA being involved in two sports,” he said.

Both Martinez and McGee play soccer.

The 2nd sport for Martinez is athletic trainer/ student aide.

McGee also played defensive lineman in football for the JV his junior year, and varsity as a senior.

Although both students were honored for the same accomplishments, their philosophies on success are different.

Martinez believes, “It is important to lift people up when stuff happens, because some people need that little extra smile in their day to make them feel better.”

McGee’s motto is, “Once you start something, you should do your best to keep up with it, do your best at it, and finish it.”

Both say the biggest time management tool was between the end of their classes and the start of practice.

Martinez says, “We always have time before the soccer game. I’ll make sure to do my homework or study for a test. I want to do my home work before, because after a game it’s hard.”

Both students say family members enabled them to succeed in athletics and academics.

McGee looks up to his granddad and dad for their work ethic.
