Gilbert, Gray Collegiate baseball still alive in post-season

Only 2 Chronicle Country teams remained in the SC High School League baseball playoffs as of Monday.

Gilbert defeated Strom Thurmond 8-2 in Game 1 of the Best-of-3 Class 3A Lower State final Monday at home. Game 2 was Wednesday with Game 3, if necessary, Friday at a neutral site.

In Class 2A, Gray Collegiate shut out Abbeville 3-0 Monday to stay alive in the Class 2A Upper State District 2 playoffs. It needed 2 wins Tuesday against sister school Legion Collegiate to advance to the state final.

Both Airport and Dutch Fork see their seasons come to an end this past Friday. T

The Eagles defeated James Island 2-0 in Game 1 of the Class 4A Lower State District 3 final as single-season school-record RBI leader Corbin Wright accounted for both driven runs.

The Trojans returned the game in Game 2 as Hogan Garner struck out 6 and held Airport (20-10) hitless in a 8-0 win to claim the district title.

In Irmo, Dutch Fork was swept by Berkeley in the Class 5A Lower State District 3 final. The Stags held off a late rally to win Game 1 6-5 and pulled away late in Game 2 to come away with the 11-7 victory.

Dutch Fork finished the season with a 18-6 record.

In softball, it was “Black Friday” as all 3 remaining Chronicle Country teams fell in its respective district finals.

Lexington managed to force a deciding game in the Class 5A Lower State District 3 final with Berkeley following a 6-5 win in Game 1.

Down 5-4 in the Top 7th, Sarah Gordon belted a gametying home run and Alyssa McCraw singled home Jessica Senn to put the Lady Wildcats ahead.

In Game 2, Lexington was defeated 7-5 to finish 19-5.

The Gilbert softball team saw its undefeated season come to an end with 2 losses to Dillon. The Lady Indians (18-2) were shut out in Game 1 3-0, then saw a late comeback bid come up short in a 9-8 loss.

In Class 2A, Pelion was defeated 10-1 by Buford in the Lower State District 3 final to finish 15-3-1.
