Friday — July 22

Paddle & Pint

Saluda Shoals Park (5605 Bush River Rd. in Columbia) hosts Paddle & Pint. Paddle the Lower Saluda River surrounded by beautiful scenery and wildlife. After an hour on the water, sample delicious craft beers. Trip is dependent on weather and river levels. Boats and all necessary equipment are provided. The event begins at 6 p.m. and is for ages 21 and up only. Tickets are $47. Visit icrc.net for more information.

Purple Martin Tour

Head over to Lake Murray for an evening of birdwatching as part of the Purple Martin Tour. Join Wingard’s Naturalist and USCG Captains Zach Steinhauser or Rick Crout for a pontoon tour of the largest purple martin roost in North America, right on Lake Murray. During summer evenings, hundreds of thousands of purple martins travel to the 12-acre Bomb Island to roost. The tour runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and costs $50. Family Fun Night

The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden hosts Family Fun Night, in conjunction with the Columbia Museum of Art: “Enjoy the Puppet Time Machine Theater’s performance of ‘Neighbors,’ a show about our local wildlife. Explore the world of bugs and flowers: try pollinating giant blossoms, capturing aphids as a ladybug superhero, or seeing the world from an ant’s perspective. Make paper flowers, go on a scavenger hunt throughout the garden, and join in the other art activities. Participants must use the West Columbia Entrance (1300 Botanical Pkwy.). The Splash Pad will not be open for this event.” The cost is $15 per family and registration for the event is required at riverbanks.org.

Eunoia Soul Grand Opening

Join Eunoia Soul (403 E. Main St.) for their grand opening. The shop sells a variety of natural, organic meds, crystals and other healing items. Picken Pearls (concert)

Join the five-piece, harmony-rich band the Picken Pearls for an evening of bluegrass, folk and country at Bill’s Music Shop & Pickin’ Parlor (710 Meeting St. in West Columbia). Showtime is 7 p.m., and admission is a $10 donation. Visit billsmusicshop.com for more information.

Adam Chaffins & Brit Taylor (concert)

Steel Hands Brewing (2350 Foreman St. in Cayce) continues its Nashville Nights concert series with a performance by Adam Chaffins and Britt Taylor. Chaffins plays a wide-ranging Americana style that incorporates R&B and indie rock, while Taylor is more of a pure-country storyteller. Michael Haney hosts the event, which is free to attend. Sister Hazel (concert)

Drummer and bandleader Whitney Sellers hosts “An Evening of Rhythmic Grooves” at Chayz Lounge (607 Meeting St. in West Columbia). Expect Sellers and her band The Vibe to perform classics by Taste of Honey, Erykah Badu, Bill Withers, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Bobby Caldwell and more. 2 Slices (concert)

New Brookland Tavern (122 State St. in West Columbia) welcomes Charleston psychedelic pop group 2 Slices, along with avant-garde soul group Numbtongue, indie pop band Travel Therapy and synth-fueled dance pop artist Failed Save. “Shrek The Musical Jr”.

Head to the Village Square Theatre (105 Caughman Rd.) for a performance of “Shrek The Musical Jr.,” based on both the beloved Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and the subsequent Broadway musical: “Shrek leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance.  Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, ‘Shrek Jr.’ is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.” Showtime is 7:30 p.m., and tickets cost between $17 and $21. Dikembe (concert)

New Brookland Tavern (122 State St. in West Columbia) welcomes Dikembe, Zeta, FK MT., Art Star and Stress Fractures. Dikembe plays jangly emo punk and grungy alt-rock. Zeta is a Florida-based rock band with Venezuelan roots. Art Star is a Charleston progressive band, and Stress Fractures is a Charlotte hardrock band. Thursday — July 28

“Beauty & The Beast” (musical)

The Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College (7300 College St. in Irmo) hosts a performance of “Beauty & The Beast” by the Chapin Community Theatre. The beloved Disney musical kicks off at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $15 for youth 17 and under. Visit harbisontheatre.org for more information.

Christmas in July

Head to downtown Newberry on July 23 for its Christmas In July event. Downtown will be full of merchants and vendors hosting their best sales of the summer. There will be food trucks, cold treats and a free North Pole Cooling Station, along with a Story Time Scavenger Hunt for the kids. The event is free to attend. Palmetto Tasty Tomato Festival

The NoMa Warehouse (2222 Sumter St. in Columbia) hosts the annual Palmetto Tasty Tomato Festival on July 23. Enjoy tomato tasting, live music, kids activities, Maters Matter sustainability talks, arts and crafts, farming, environmental vendors and more. Midlands Women’s Day

Head to the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center (1101 Lincoln St.) on July 23 for the 5th Annual Midlands Women’s Day celebration. The event focuses on educating, empowering and nurturing women and features free chair massages, a 360 photo booth, facial hair waxing, makeovers, canvas painting classes, henna brows, karaoke, speakers, stage demos and more. Carolina in the Collection

Join the Columbia Museum of Art (1515 Main St.) for the Carolina in the Collection tour July 24. Discover the rich artistic tapestry of South Carolina and see art that once adorned local homes.
