Sunset split aims to ease traffic congestion

US 378 would be divided for east and west bound traffic

Posted

Lexington officials aim to improve safety at one of the town’s most congested intersections.

The town plan would realign Sunset Boulevard (US 378) at Corley Mill Road, Ginny Lane and the I-20 westbound exit ramp.

Sunset Boulevard is one of the major arteries into and out of Lexington at rush hours.

Corley Mill Road is the primary access road to River Bluff High School, multiple residential developments and the Lake Murray Dam.

Ginny Lane is the entrance and exit road for 2 other Lexington 1 schools.

With traffic heading for Columbia and I-20, the intersection is a traffic bottle neck.

The “Sunset Split” plan would separate eastbound and westbound traffic on Sunset Boulevard into 2 1-way roads.

Town officials want to:

• Build a new road north of the existing Sunset Boulevard.

• Reconstruct Dedrick Drive from Corley Mill Road west to a tie-in beyond Northside Boulevard at Darby Ambrose Road.

The new road will carry westbound 378 traffic toward Lexington.

The existing Sunset Boulevard will serve only eastbound traffic toward Columbia.

The public is able to see the plan online and provide feedback.

Comments regarding the proposed project can be submitted now through Aug. 18.
