Will Lexington County teachers join a May 1 walkout over their pay?
A state teachers group says they plan a Statehouse march that day over pay and other school issues.
The year-old SCforED said 408 teachers have registered to attend.
How many teach here was not available.
The Chronicle has asked the 5 school districts if they anticipate any teachers walking out, if this would violate their contracts and what plans have been made if any walk out or fail to report for work May 1.
Lawmakers have agreed to give teachers a 4% raise next year and raise new teachers’ starting pay.
The group is unhappy that an education reform bill passed by the House but not the Senate ignores teachers’ problems.
In January about 250 teachers came to the Statehouse to tell lawmakers they wanted more money and other reforms.
“Not participating will only allow the cycle of detrimental educational policy to continue in our state,” SCforED said. “It is time to stand up for ourselves.”
