The best blueberry bliss

A treat for the eyes and the palate

This soft and sweet baked blueberry dessert goes by many names but ‘Bliss’ seems to the most fitting. This works with equal amounts of other berries as well.

Place 2 cups of rinsed, fresh blueberries in a greased baking dish. Cut up one stick of salted butter and distribute over the top. Sprinkle with one cup of granulated sugar.

Select a baking dish that allows a single layer of berries for best results.

Bake at 350° uncovered about 20 minutes until the berries soften and release their juice. Remove from oven and while still hot, cover with a mixture of:

1 cup of self-rising flour

1 cup of sugar

3/4 cup of milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

Distribute as evenly as you can and dot with another 1/2 stick of salted butter.

Bake another 20 minutes at 350° and remove from oven. Cool on a wire rack for an hour. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

This will serve about 6 people.

We always served this in footed, clear crystal dishes as the color of the cooked fruit is beautiful. Our neighbor in Charleston used the pink depression glass that so many of us remember. The dark purple of the berries in the pink glass is beautiful.

I have seen this glass at many antique malls so you would be able to start a collection. This glass is beautiful for many occasions and makes a memory all on its own.

Serve this with a spoon full of vanilla yogurt or ice cream or just on its own.

An orange zest curl and a mint leaf on top make it even more special!

Blueberries are in season at many farms and at the Lexington Farmer’s Market.

Whether you pick them or buy them, you are in for a treat.
