My story of a personal cancer scare

This month we are supporting the battle against breast cancer. Make pink your favorite color.

Breast cancer hits close to home for me. My grandmother had cancer and had a breast removed. Eventually her cancer returned. After many chemo treatments, cancer took her life.

Different cancers run in my family on my mothers’ side. This taught me to be cautious.

I had a scare a couple years ago from fatty tissue in one breast.

Later, it became more firm, like a mass. I scheduled a mammogram. As I sat in the quiet room with soft music playing and dim lighting, many thoughts ran through my head. I was told their cancer specialist would speak with me to schedule a biopsy.

In the midst of this shock, I fought hard to hold back my tears.

Could this be true? How would I tell my family I have cancer?

Finally, the results were in. I had a fibroadenoma – a benign breast tumor. Luckily, I did not end up with cancer.

I still monitor closely for any changes.

I hope every woman looks for signs and symptoms.

Let’s wear pink in support of the ones who are still fighting and ones who lost their fight with cancer.
