GOLF

At 55, Vijay Singh is golf strong and alive.

Every week that goes by is an awesome learning experience for me. I am privileged to have the opportunity to watch, observe, and study the best players in the world play golf every week.

It’s my intention to share the very best and top takeaway each week so that anyone reading this can benefit.

This week at the Green-brier, Wesley got paired with Singh, who has won 34 times on the PGA tour including three professional major championships. He is 55 years old and his physical ability compared to the rest is still in the top one percent.

Can you see any football, basketball, baseball, soccer, or tennis player being able to compete at the highest level at this age? Phil Mickelson is 48 years old and he won this year. Both of these athletes were in the field, both made the cut, and both are among the longest hitters in the world.

In my opinion, if you make the cut on the PGA tour, you still have a chance to win the event.

Both of these experienced athletes still engage in an incredible fitness routine. I can’t wait to learn more about this so I can share, but I will say that anybody who is not physically challenged still can follow.

I know this. A 56, almost 57-year-old is incredibly inspired after watching Vijay hit his driver 20 yards by my son, Wesley, who statistically looks average among his peers.

Incidentally, the PGA statistics can be a bit misleading. It doesn’t tell the entire story, contrary to popular belief, so I would not go making any bets based on statistics.

While Vijay’s physical ability is incredibly special, his short game was dull. He didn’t seem to be having much fun playing golf. It’s pretty obvious that his putting and chipping skills are well below his standards. What’s my point? Your attitude and mindset is under your control and the short game is the easiest place to develop skills. So no matter where you are, how old or how young, go practice the short shots first and constantly try to improve your attitude.

Now, it’s off to watch the John Deere. This will be Wesley‘s final chance to qualify for the British Open.

Now to some local golf, Jacob Fuller of Chapin recently won a Charleston chapter event by shooting 72 at Rivertown Golf Club.

The Tri-County Chapter played last week at Newberry Country Club and the following players were medalist in their divisions:

•Boys 7-9 - Trust Winters

•Boys 10-12 - Liam Stilwell

•Boys 13-14 - Miles Eu-banks

•Boys 15-18 - Drew Greene

•Girls 13-18 - Lexton Petz
