Transition to 5A has not slowed down Chapin girls’ lacrosse, baseball

The first year in Class 5A has gone perfectly so far for two Chap-in High School teams.

Both the undefeated girls’ lacrosse and baseball teams clinched region titles on April 4. Each has dominated in its own fashion and look to extend that success into the post-season.

The Lady Eagles finished its 1st ever undefeated regular season on the road. The 28-0 win over Irmo capped a 5-day stretch in which they defeated Wando (11-7) for the 2nd straight year, Lexington (18-6) and Irmo, all on the road.

The regular-season ending victory also clinched the top seed out of Region 5, District 3 for the Lady Eagles (12-0, 4-0).

“It’s super-exciting to be 12-0, a perfect season so far,” head coach Jennifer Green said. “We’re hoping to make it really far in the playoffs.”

Senior Jordan Green, Grace Mc-Clure and Sadie Salazar led Chap-in with 3 goals each in the win over Irmo. Green also assisted on 6 goals, followed by Eden Ellison with 4.

The Lady Eagles have finished state runner-up the past 2 seasons in Class 4A. Now, the younger Green wants to make a return trip to W.C. Hawkins Stadium for a 3rd chance at a championship.

“So much, I can’t even sleep most nights,” she said about wanting to win a state title. “Every girl wants this so much.”

Based on the playoff brackets, Chapin will open April 16 at home against the 5th place team out of Region 5, District 3. Irmo and River Bluff were tied with 1 match remaining entering Monday.

Lexington versus River Bluff for region boys’ lacrosse championship

The Region 5, District 5 boys’ lacrosse title match between Lexington (11-4, 5-0) and River Bluff (11-3, 5-0) took place Wednesday at Wildcat Stadium.

Solid starting pitching has lifted the Eagles to the top of Region 5-5A.

Chapin clinched the region after winning 2 of 3 from Lexington. In Game 1, University of South Carolina commit Cade Austin struck out 8 in a 2-0 victory.

After dropping a 5-1 road contest 2 nights later, Chapin blanked the Wildcats again 1-0 as Chris Veach struck out 12 in 7 scoreless innings. The Eagles finished 9-3 in Region 5-5A.

Despite 8 shutouts posted this season, head coach Scott McLeod is concerned about his team’s lack of run production. In the last 6 region games, the Eagles managed just 6 runs.

“The hitting is a big concern,” he said. “Last week, (against River Bluff), we won 2 games. We won 2-1, 1-0 and lost 2-1 and tonight, we won 2-0. But the bats are just not going right now. I’m not sure what it is, but if they ever start coming alive, with our pitching and our defense, we’ll be a pretty good team. But right now, we ain’t hitting.”
