Tribute Bands bring classic rock to Icehouse Amphitheatre all summer long

Posted

Last week, we told you about The Best of Everything, a tribute to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers created by members of popular local bands Tokyo Joe and The Root Doctors. These musicians didn’t just play Tom Petty’s hits and classics; they made an effort to recreate as many details of Petty’s career as possible, including his signature top hat and unmistakable Rickenbacker guitar.

For fans of the late Petty, one of the great American rockers, writers and bandleaders, it was surely a night of nostalgia and fun, taking in a slew of hits like “Free Fallin’,” “Don’t Come Around Here (No More),” “American Girl” and many more, all experienced in a far more intimate environment than the arenas that Petty played in his prime years.

What’s interesting about that show is that it actually served as a kickoff for a Summer full of tributes to classic rock icons at Icehouse Amphitheatre, and the roster of performers is an interesting mix of local and national talent.

First up is Interstellar Echoes: A Tribute To Pink Floyd on Friday, June 14. The Atlanta-based band has become increasingly popular in the Southeast over the past few years, and it’s largely because of their devotion to recreating the Pink Floyd concert experience, not just the songs. The band has a stellar laser light show just like Floyd used to, and singer/bassist Jim Gorman’s ability to sound just like Floyd vocalists Roger Waters AND David Gilmour is uncanny.

And if you’re a fan of Gilmour’s incredible solos, you’re in luck; guitarist Chris Hinson has done his homework, and if you close your eyes during his solos on tunes like “Comfortably Numb” and “Time,” it sounds like you’re listening to the original recordings.

Next up on July 11 is ZOSO: The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience. ZOSO has been around for 30  years, and they’ve got their act down to a science. The band can sound just as majestic and gritty as the original Zeppelin, but they also play in full costume, with an uncannily accurate Robert Plant soundalike and a guitarist who apes every swaggering mannerism that Jimmy Page ever attempted.

On August 16, classic rock fans get a double dose of nostalgia, with performances by the local Bad Company tribute act Schoolboy Johnny and a Foreigner tribute band called Rev On: The Foreigner Experience. That’s a lot of big hits in one evening, notably “Feels Like The First Time,” “Can’t Get Enough,” “Hot Blooded” and “Shooting Star,” among many others.

Tribute Band Summer at Icehouse ends with two performances, one by the exciting Taylor Swift act Taylor Nation (bring the kids) and one that brings the concert calendar full circle: Rocketman – A Tribute To Sir Elton John. Members of Tokyo Joe take on a musical icon, going to great lengths to wear costumes that are exact replicas of those worn by Elton himself, and to entertain visually with state of the art lighting,

It's a fitting end to a series of classic-rock tributes that Tokyo Joe themselves kicked off, and a great way to end a Summer of classic tunes.
