New unemployment claims rose slightly but are 87% below the covid-19 pandemic peak.

To help add context to statistics, WalletHub researchers released updated rankings for South Carolina and other states where unemployment claims are recovering the quickest.

To identify which states’ work forces are experiencing the quickest recovery, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia on 3 metrics based on changes in unemployment claims.

The change in South Carolina weekly unemployment claims (1=quickest recovery, 25=average):

• 126.43% Change in Unemployment Claims (latest week vs 2019). SC 4,884 the week of Oct. 5, 2020 vs 2,157 the week of Oct. 7, 2019, 12th quickest recovery in the US.

• -34.63% Change in Unemployment Claims (latest week vs start of 2020). 4,884 the week of October 5, 2020 vs 7,471 the week of January 1, 2020, 3rd quickest recovery in the U.S.

• 1,201.32% Change in Unemployment Claims (since start of covid-19 vs last year), 771,450 between the week of March 16, 2020 and the week of Oct. 5, 2020 vs 64,217 between the week of March 18, 2019 and the week of Oct. 7, 2019, 14th slowest recovery in the US.
