White Knoll High receives second threat in a week, no changes to schedule

Posted

For the second time in a week, White Knoll High School responded to a threat.

“We were notified this afternoon by law enforcement that another threat was directed at our school,” the school’s principal, Nicholas Pearson, writes in a message to families. “Together with law enforcement, school and district administrators conducted a search of the building even though there was a low probability that this was a credible threat.”

The school day continued with no changes to the regular schedule.

“School and district administrators and law enforcement officials are extremely frustrated that our school continues to be disrupted by these threats,” Pearson writes. “However, we remain vigilant in taking every precaution possible to keep our campus safe for teaching and learning while limiting the disruption to our students and employees.”

White Knoll previously received another threat earlier this week, reported through the Crimestoppers tip line the morning of Tuesday, April 11. The threat was deemed not to be credible, but a search of the building was conducted, with nothing being found. As with the second threat, the school day continued on as normal.

Capt. Adam Myrick public information office for the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, which has jurisdiction over White Knoll said the department isn't sure if the two threats are related.

"That’s part of what we’re looking into as our work on the case continues," he said.

Speaking to the department's April 14 response, Myric said, "Similar to our response earlier this week, we conducted a search of the hallways and other areas of the school building. We coordinated with White Knoll High administrators and district officials throughout the response."

Lexington County School District 1 said in a April 14 statement that it encourages anyone with information about this week's threat to contact the sheriff's department or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC (274-6372) or online at 888crimesc.com.

"As Mr. Pearson stated in his message to families, school and district administrators are extremely frustrated that White Knoll High continues to be disrupted by these threats but we remain vigilant in taking the necessary precautions," the district said.

White Knoll received threats earlier this year on Feb. 6 and 7, the same week that a Columbia 15-year-old was arrested for a rash of school threats affecting both Lexington and Richland County.

"In the past few months, multiple students, including some in Lexington 1, have faced serious criminal charges as well as recommendations for expulsion from school," Lexington 1 said in an April 11 statement. "We all have important roles to play in keeping our schools safe including reminding our students that a social media post/message or text message is not worth these life-altering consequences.”
