Pelion’s Landon Byrd was voted Athlete of the Week after winning the 2A/1A 113-pound title.
Byrd dominated his way through the championship bracket. He won his first round match 12-1 and his second 13-2. His third round match was the closest of his title run, but he prevailed 4-0. Byrd clinched the title with an 11-3 win in the championship round.
With the win, Byrd earned his first state title. He was previously a two-time state qualifier in the 106-pound weight class. He finished second last year, and in his first year at 113, he became a champion.
Byrd earned his 100th career win during the event. As a senior, he wrestled his final match in a Pelion uniform.
Lexington freshman Grace Beeson won the girls 120-pound title in her first season as a high school wrestler.
Beeson pinned Arielle Daniels of South Florence four minutes and 31 seconds into the championship match to claim the title. Beeson won all three of her matches during the event by pinning her opponent, and she conceded zero points.
The freshman began the year unranked and under the radar. With three years left to compete, Beeson is sure to gain attention as her career continues to unfold.
