An adult and a minor were killed Sept. 15 during a traffic accident in the heart of one of West Columbia’s central commercial districts.

The collision occurred at the 12th Street and B Avenue intersection in Triangle City at about 7:30 p.m., according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. The Chronicle observed multiple ambulances, fire trucks and cop cars responding to the scene, with West Columbia Police urging drivers to avoid the area until posting that all lanes at the intersection had been cleared as of 4:36 a.m.

“Mr. Cornelius Alexander Clory, 68, of Ruther Glen, Virginia was stopped at B Avenue when his vehicle was struck from behind,” the Lexington County Coroner’s Office posted to Facebook. “Mr. Clory and the rear passenger in the vehicle, Ms. Leeya Janae Leaverette, 17, of West Columbia were pronounced dead on scene due to the injuries sustained in the collision. The front passenger of the vehicle was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

The driver who allegedly struck Clory’s vehicle was arrested, accused of driving drunk and fleeing the scene after the accident.

“Officers have taken 24-year-old Joshua R Yarborough of West Columbia into custody for two counts of Felony DUI Resulting in Death and one count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident stemming from this incident,” West Columbia Police posted to Facebook. “Mr. Yarborough will be transported to the Lexington County Detention Center to await bond court.”

According to the jail’s website, Yarborough remains in custody there, with bond having been denied on all three charges.

Both the coroner’s office and West Columbia police note that the investigation is ongoing.
