Blowfish wrap rainy week with sights set on end-of-season playoff push

Posted

The Blowfish are entering the final week of their regular season with a shot at the Coastal Plains playoffs on the line. Last week was wet and wild as the Blowfish canceled two of five games due to weather.

Lexington County went 2-1 in the games the team did play and grabbed a league win to pull within half a game of the second-half leaders. The Blowfish have six league games left to overcome the half-game lead held by the Martinsville Mustangs. Lexington briefly took the top spot early htis week but fell back to second after a Tuesday night loss.

The Blowfish started last week with a 10-8 win over the Flamingos to move closer to the top of the standings. The Blowfish spread its scoring out across five innings to build and then retake the lead en route to their win.

Ashby Vining and Blake Martin had three RBIs each to lead the team from the plate. A pair of Flamingos recorded two RBIs as the team saw similar results from the plate. In the end, however, Florence failed to keep pace with Lexington late in the game.

The Blowfish started the game with a 2–1 lead after the first inning. That grew to a 5-1 lead after the third inning, but the Flamingos started to catch up and take the lead over the next two innings.

Down 8-7 entering the sixth inning, Lexington outscored Florence 3-0 down the stretch to reclaim the lead and win the game. Two runs were scored in the sixth before adding extra breathing room in the eighth.

Six pitchers played for the Blowfish. Jack Whitlock earned the win after throwing for two innings and recording two strikeouts with no hits, no walks and no runs. Sean Hollister went for three innings and gave up just one run with two strikeouts.

Nine different Flamingos took the mound with only one throwing for more than one inning. The nine pitchers combined for seven allowed hits, 10 runs and 11 walks with 10 strikeouts.

Game two last week was supposed to be a matchup between the Blowfish and Bacon, but the weather was not suitable for playing. The team prepared for its game the next day against the Catawba Valley Stars in a non-league game, but the rain forced that game to get canceled as well.

While the home game against the Stars was canceled, half of the team hit the road for a league game against Forest City. The Blowfish lost to the Owls 5-2 in a game where the bats on both sides were quiet most of the night.

The game was scoreless for the first three innings. Forest City broke through in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to put the game’s first run on the board.

Things went quiet again until the sixth inning when Evan Stone hit a home run to put the Blowfish on the board and tie the game. But it wasn’t tied for long.

The Owls scored three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to put the game away. Lexington added just one more run to cut the margin to three.

The Blowfish ended the week with a Saturday home match against the Stars, and despite not counting towards the CPL standings, the team won a close 9-8 thriller. The Blowfish had fewer hits overall but that did not matter as they made more out of their opportunities.

Lexington led 4-0 through five innings before both offenses caught fire in the sixth, combining for 10 runs. In the seventh and final inning, the Stars put pressure on the Blowfish by scoring three runs to pull within one. But the Blowfish stood firm in the end and held their lead to clinch the win.

With one week of games left, every match matters as the Blowfish look to secure a playoff spot and play for back-to-back Petitt Cup Championships. The team needs to overcome its half-game deficit in the second half of the season to clinch its spot. The team will have six games left this week to do it.
