Future high school football hopefuls will get the opportunity to experience the Friday night lights feeling for free thanks to a camp offered by the Airport High School football staff. 

Another free camp, also run by the Airport football staff, will be for players’ moms, allowing them to connect with other mothers and experience some of the daily tasks players do. 

The Friday night lights camp is July 12 and will teach kids between the ages of 5-12 fundamental skills necessary for playing football. 

“We see this as an opportunity to grow the game of football. It’s been under attack for years and nothing prepares young men better for life than this game,” Airport head coach and athletic director Shane Fidler told the Chronicle. “We are blessed with amazing people and facilities at Airport so we see it as our duty to serve the community.” 

The moms clinic is July 16 from 6-8 p.m. at Airport High School. Fidler said he hopes the clinic will educate and ease some concerns many parents have.

“Moms sometimes are apprehensive or don’t know what’s going on in their sons' program,” he said. “So we use the moms' clinic to let them meet the coaches and learn some of the basics of the game, so they know their son is in good hands with us.”

This will be the second edition of the program at Airport, but Fidler has hosted similar camps during his stops at Ashley Ridge and Waccamaw. Last year’s program drew in over 250 participants between the two events. 

While the clinics are for young players and mothers, current members of the Airport football team will also attend and assist the coaching staff in running things.  

“We always want our players serving and growing their leadership and communication skills,” Fidler said. “These are two great chances for them, and we use them to help them grow as the future men of our country.” 

Both events are free and open to anyone, regardless if they attend a Lexington Two school. Registration for the youth camp and moms clinic can be found on the Airport athletics website.
