Ever heard of Irish potatoes? I discovered them recently at a local convenience store in Delaware. These little “potatoes” came in a small green and white box. Being born and raised in South Carolina, I had never seem them before. I decided to try them. They did not taste like potatoes at all. What I got was a ball of pure sweetened coconut. It was quite a surprise. Turns out Irish potatoes have no ties to Ireland itself. They are believed to have originated by Irish immigrants between 1845-1852. They’re native to Philadelphia and are popular in the area, especially around St. Patrick’s Day. They’ve also been called “coconut cream drops” or “cream potatoes.” They were delicious, but very sweet. What do Irish potatoes have to do with your health? The candies are coated in cinnamon, which has some health benefits. Cinnamon contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. It also lowers blood sugar levels and has a anti-diabetic effect. Just be sure limit the amount of sugar you eat. Everything in moderation!
