Are our politicians accountable to us?

“The truth demands accountability,” US Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-MA, tweeted.

She was arguing for the impeachment of then-President Donald Trump.

Sen. Warren loves “accountability.” In 2018, she proposed the “Accountable Capitalism Act.” In 2019, the “Corporate Executive Accountability Act.” In 2020, according to Forbes, she demanded “Accountability From 181 CEOs.”

A search on her name and the word “accountability” returns 668,000 results.

The relevant question when she brings up “accountability” is, of course, “accountability to whom?” And the feeling one gets, regardless of her claims to be acting on behalf of her constituents is that it’s all about accountability to Sen. Warren.

Warren’s not the only politician with this attitude. She’s just loud about it.

Her mask (not for covid-19 but the other one) briefly came off when she told Amazon that she wants “to break up Big Tech so you’re not powerful enough to heckle senators with snotty tweets.”

To whom is Sen. Warren accountable?

The voters of Massachusetts. But in the US “Senator for Life” system, incumbents get re-elected more than 90% of the time.

That’s not because their voters love them but because incumbents rake in a lot of money to hold onto their seats. She may be accountable to her campaign contributors.

Owners or employees of Big Tech firms she wants to “break up” rank high on her list. Are they trying to buy her off?
