Brookland-Cayce, Lexington players named Athlete of the Week after elevating teams to victory

High-stakes fall sports action continued last week as Lexington County teams are playing to keep their seasons going.

Whether it was on the volleyball court, golf course or football field, this part of the season is all about surviving and advancing. With uncertain futures ahead, teams are relying on their best talent to carry them as deep as possible.

This week’s Athlete of the Week winners come from Brookland-Cayce and Lexington. Each player put up big numbers as their team played in must-win situations.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Avery King

Brookland-Cayce’s football team is currently playing to keep its playoff goals alive and can’t afford any more losses. The Bearcats knew this and exploded for a 40-28 win over Airport behind a dominant performance from running back Avery King.

King rushed for over 300 yards and scored five touchdowns in the win. Both of those are new season highs.

The junior has been a reliable offensive weapon for Brookland-Cayce this season. With that performance, he crossed 1,000 yards rushing on the year to go with eight touchdowns.

Brookland-Cayce has one more game left this season against Swansea. The two teams are currently tied in the region standings, and the winner will likely get the conference’s final playoff spot, while the loser stays home.

The Bearcats will likely look Kings’ direction again to get the crucial win.

Riley Livingston

Lexington volleyball starting setter Riley Livingston helped the Wildcats advance in the 5A playoffs with a 3-1 win over Rock Hill.

Livingston played in all four sets for Lexington, finishing with a team-high 20 assists. She also contributed six digs, two kills and an ace.

This season, Livingston has been the main facilitator of Lexington’s offense. She has over 400 assists this season, leading the entire team.

Lexington’s playoff run continued this Monday in a game against River Bluff.
