June marks the end of the school year and offers opportunities for the summer months.

that Sherry Cariens, principal of Oak Grove Elementary, was honored with a drop-in at Palmetto Collegiate Center on the occasion of her retirment. She began her career as a math teacher at Oak Grove in 1976. She has also been an administrator at Lexington Middle School and Lexington Intermediate School. She has won many accolades including 2016 SC Elemetary Principal of the Year and the Joseph M. Bedenbaugh Administrator of the Year.

Pisgah Lutheran Church sponsored a free movie on Sunday at Village Square Theatre. The feature was “Would You Be My Neigbor?”, a portrait of the philosphy and work of children’s entertainer Fred Rogers. Fred was famous for wearing a cardigan when he hosted the popular “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.” He was a true educator and taught children kindness, respect, and to love one another.

School graduations are the order of this week. June 7, White Knoll and River Bluff high schools will hold ceremonies at Colonial Life Arena. Lexington High’s graduation is June 8.

Some of our local high school graduates are Jack Long, Pine Lake Preparatory High, who will attend UNC at Chapel Hill; Jessie Merkel, SC Governor’s School of the Arts ande Humanites, who will attend Warren Wilson Collge; Max Senf, Gilbert High, who will attend Tri-County Technical College; Trevor Crocker, Providence High School, and Jada Johnson, Lexington High. Graduating from college are Louisa Brunson and Griffin Hiers, College of Charleston; Erin Harman, University of Georgia; Molly Sharpe, University of SC; and Caroline Plowden, New York University.

The Town of Lexington is sponsoring The Market at Icehouse, 9 am-noon, every Saturday through Sept. 28, excluding July 6. The event offers a community-friendly atmosphere to promote local farmers and artisans. There are so many items to see and taste. Plan to visit The Market!

The Shepherd’s Center will host a “Thank You Volunteers” lunchon and annual meeting June 14, 11 am, at Lexington United Methodist Church. Lunch is provided by Lakeside Place and McLeod Home Care.

During this summer heat, stay hydrated and please do not leave your children or pets in a parked vehicle. Heat rises quicky and heat stroke or even death can occur. And, pleae don’t walk your pet in the hottest part of the day. The heat is on, though summer won’t officially arrive until June 21.
