A dozen new signs, marking the past of the area, have been placed at the 12,000 Year History Park on Congaree Creek in Cayce.

The markers are called the “Wayside Exhibits” and were commissioned by the River Alliance. The signs were designed, produced and installed by the SC State Museum.

The project, according to the River Alliance, was funded by the Central Carolina Community Foundation and the City of Cayce.

“The 12,000 Year History park is so rich with history,” said Cayce Mayor Elise Par-tin. “Thanks to a Central Carolina Community Foundation grant and funding from the City of Cayce, visitors from far and wide will get to not only enjoy the immensely beautiful and peaceful natural settings but learn about the stories of our nation that happened right here.”

The last of the signs were put into the ground Feb. 4.

According to The River Alliance, the signs are already getting noticed. As they were being installed, walkers on the trail stopped to take a look and read about the history recorded on the signs.

More of the historical markers are being designed now and will be installed in the spring.
