Children’s deaths in hot cars rising

Posted

Let this be a reminder to all parents of toddlers:

Our weather is cooler, but sunny October days can still turn the interior of your car into a furnace.

The number of children who have died from heatstroke this year after being left in hot cars is among the highest on record.

This year 49 children died and a record 53 died last year, according to the National Safety Council.

The good news is that no local children were involved, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s office.

Most deaths occur during the hotter summer months, but they can happen now.

With outside temperatures in the 60s, more child deaths could happen before the end of the year.

Over the last 20 years, most children’s deaths occurred when a parent or guardian unintentionally left them in the car, if even for what they thought would be only a few minutes.

“If you can forget your keys or your cellphone, you certainly have the capability of forgetting your child,” said Janette Fennell, founder of KidsAndCars.org, a child-safety advocacy group.

The temperature inside a car can rise about 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.

Heatstroke can be lethal for children when their body temperature reaches 107°.

Advocacy groups have pushed Congress to pass the Hot Cars Act to require new cars to be outfitted with child-safety alert systems.

Auto maker trade groups said they would voluntarily add rear-seat reminder systems on new cars by the model year 2025.
