Chronicle Country alumnus are making news in the Big South with 2 receiving conference honors and another transferring to 1 of its schools.

KATIE THOMPSON (Presbyterian)

The Presbyterian College senior and Lexington High School graduate repeated as Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year on April 23.

Thompson became the 1st back-to-back conference award winner since Nicolin Luecke of Charleston Southern and the 7th player in Big South women’s tennis history to earn multiple scholarathlete of the year honors.

An early childhood education major with a 4.0 grade point average, Thompson appeared in 12 matches during the abbreviated 2020 spring season. Her 6-1, 6-4 singles victory against Winthrop on March 12 tied the PC Division I program record for career wins in Big South matches (14).

In Thompson’s career, she finished 3rd in school singles win percentage at .569 and led the Lady Blue Hose in doubles win percentage at .688 (22-10).

TOMMY BRUNER (USC-Upstate)

The former state champion point guard at Gray Collegiate Academy was named to both the Big South and College Insider All-American All-Freshman teams.

“I appreciate being in the same category with some of the best freshmen in the country,” Bruner said.

Not only was Bruner a Big South All-Freshman team selection, but he was also a 2-time Big South Freshman of the Week and College Sports Madness publication recipient. Bruner finished 2nd on the team in scoring (14 points per game). He played in all 33 games for the Spartans and ended the season 1st in field goals (158) and 3rd in the Big South in free throw percentage (80.2).

WINSTON HILL (Francis Marion/Presbyterian)

The former Irmo High School All-State standout announced his future plans on Twitter.

The 3rd team All-Peach Belt Conference forward will transfer to Presbyterian College this fall.

“I feel that the best decision for my skill and development will be accomplished at Presbyterian College,” Hill tweeted. “I am excited to make my dream of playing D1 basketball a reality. Time to get back to work!”

The 2-time PBC Player of the Week and USBWA National Player of the Week led the league in scoring (21.1 points per game) and was second in rebounding at (9.3 boards per game).

He also ranked 4th in free throws made (133), 6th in minutes played per game (34.1), 11th in blocked shots (22), and 16th in steals (36). A 2-time PBC Player of the Week and USBWA National Player of the Week, Hill registered 12 double-doubles.
