Clock changing can become past history

Sleepy Lexington County grouches, take heart. The tyranny of setting clocks back and forth may be nearer an end. No, we will not do away with Daylight Saving Time but with Standard Time. When we “sprang forward” Sunday morning, we entered DST when the sun sets later in our days. In November we “fall back” to Standard Time when the sun sets earlier. We may be mistaken if we blame DST. You may blame Standard Time for this. Now President Trump has tweeted that “Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is OK with me!” Those who favor DST say it saves energy, but research argues this isn’t true. Making DST permanent will end the “fall back” in November. We would stay on summer hours all year. Hawaii and much of Arizona do not change to DST. Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island aim to make DST permanent. But only Congress can change federal law to permanent DST. Florida’s “Sunshine Protection Act” to make DST permanent is on hold. Time will tell if that will change.
