Coast Guard lands at Columbia’s Owens Field

A Coast Guard MH65D helicopter landed at Owens Field in Columbia the morning of July 10.

Ken Plesser, Coast Guard Auxiliary Aircraft Commander and Navy League member, coordinated with Coast Guard Air Station Savannah to bring the helicopter and crew to the meeting of the Columbia Navy League.

Coast Guard Auxiliary members from Flotillas 12-3 and 12-6 were present for lunch and the presentation by the flight crew Commander, Lieutenant Brock.

LT Brock’s presentation included information on the training of flight officers in the Coast Guard and the types of missions he and his crew had flown.

Their primary purpose involves Search and Rescue.

The flight crew were scheduled to fly to Richland Memorial Hospital to check out the helipad and then to Augusta to examine helicopter facilities their hospitals.

The flights were part of the mission to check facilities and promote cooperation between the Coast Guard and civilian facilities in emergency situations.
