Dr. Daniel Sandel Shull, Jr. of Raleigh, NC died on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. He was born in Brookland (now West Columbia), S.C. on June 25, 1930, son of the late Daniel Sandel Shull, Sr. and the late Carolina Elizabeth Shealy Shull. He graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School, Cayce, S.C. in 1947. He received a B.S. degree Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina in 1951, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1960 and 1965.

He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi scholastic honorary societies. He was a Life Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, where he was active in the Institute’s Magnetics Society and its Electromagnetic Compatibility Society. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Brookland-Cayce High School Education Foundation, and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, N.C.

He served in the U.S. Army (1955-56) at their Signal Corps Research and Development Laboratories, Fort Monmouth, N.J. His professional career included positions at Stork & Lyles Architects, Columbia, SC (1950); the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Pittsburgh, Pa. (1951-61); Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, Pa. (1958-61); AT&T Bell Laboratories, Winston-Salem, N.C., Greensboro, N.C., and Naperville, Ill. (1964-85); the ITT Corporation, Raleigh, N.C. (1985-86); the Regdon Corporation, Brookfield, Ill. (1986); and Northern Telecom / Bell Northern Research, Research Triangle Park, N.C. (1986-98). He holds 2 US Patents, and is the author of 13 technical publications.

Dr. Shull is predeceased by his wife Carolyn Dimmick Shull and son Daniel A. Shull. He is survived by son Andrew W. Shull of Durham, N.C., and his wife Amelia; and a daughter Carolyn I. Shull of Durham, N.C., and her husband David. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Benjamin Daniel Shull, Emilia Rose Shull, Adylene Olive Burch Shull and Donovan Alder Burch Shull.

Visitation will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Rd, Raleigh, N.C. on June 5, 2023 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Burial will be alongside his ancestors in the Mt. Tabor (Lutheran) Cemetery, West Columbia, S.C. on Aug.14 2023 at 1 p.m.
