AROUND LEXINGTON COUNTY

Last Thursday, hundreds made their way to River Bluff High School for the 2019 Lexington Chamber Expo.

Like a pop-up mall, 120 Midlands businesses lined the school’s main street corridor to showcase their products and services. Many vendors gave away prizes, food samples and pamphlets about their businesses. It was an huge success and there will be another next year.

The chamber held its monthly breakfast meeting Tuesday, July 9. Always a well-received speaker, Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon spoke on related happenings in the county.

The gavel was handed over to the new Chamber Chair Chris Petty of Budget Blinds by outgoing Chair Troy Simpson.

New board members announced were Hank Jibaja, Trey Powell, Keith Dooley and Kirk Litton. Congratulations to all, and also to Phil Demery, who is the chamber’s Ambassador of the Month.

American Legion Post 7 held its monthly meeting Saturday at the Legion Hut. The meeting highlighted the 2019 Post 7 Palmetto Boys State and Girls State citizens. Speaking for the group were Gracen Torbett and Adam Killman of LHS, D’Asia White and Nathaniel Hope of White Knoll and Maddie Poole and Dru Lindler of River Bluff.

A delightful meal of hamburgers, hot dogs and all the trimmings was served to guests and members. State Rep. Paula Rawl Calhoon spoke on patriotism and leadership. Post Commander David Griffith presided. With him at the head table were Linda Griffith, the District 1 Commander and his wife, Unit 7’s new president Dot Tunstall, and SC Department Auxiliary President Bobbie Binner and her husband.. Attending were former Solicitor Donnie Myers and Town Administrator Britt Poole and wife Allison, and Marge Carter.

The monthly Lunch and Learn chaired by Donna and Jerry Griffin at Shiloh United Methodist Church last week had a big turnout to hear Lexington County Museum Director J.R. Fennell. He spoke on the superstitions of the county and the Dutch Fork area.

Those attending the luncheon were Christopher Greene, Dorothy Geenan, Miriam McCoy, David Taylor, Bernice Philip, Sharon Trezise, Donald Crosby, Charles Thompson, Jerry Keenan, Edie Harmon, Caroline Bryson, Sherri Owings, Wilma Shiley, Delores and Roger Rucker, Jerry Griffin, Joey Hardee, Francis Meetze, Mary Baker, Judy Nichols, Donna Griffin, Connie Branham, Michelle Anderson, Mike Anderson, Nancy Wylie and Gary Baker.

At the next meeting August 9, Peter Buttress will speak on Growing Up in London During World War II. Call 359-7586 to RSVP.

Anne Bull reports a heartwarming story:

Vicki and Tom Hudson host a cousins week each year for their grandchildren to get to know each other and enjoy adventures. Their activities include visits to the zoo, museums, water parks, and movies. Each night the children write their day’s activities in a journal which they present to their parents at the week’s end. Sounds like a fun diary to keep for many years.

Happy birthday to Mary Hazelton, Linda Smith, Bev Gunter, Cecilia McLendon, Heidi Black, Roger Rucker, Retha Sox, Angela A. Adams, Chief Haycraft, Emily Sons, Beverly Sease, Debbie Gunter, Stephen Cox, Kim Hill, Brittany Lee, Spencer Prond-Ruppert, Jane Sloan, Michele Amick, Ansley Cato, Janet Loftis, Briana Harker, Cindy Konduros, Janie Neeley, Al McMeekin, Marjorie Nichols, Shawn Williamson, Gay Clark, Katie Dutton, Chris Meetze, Aaron Rawl, Stephanie Bishop, Greta Morris, Linda Peay, Ayla Senf, and June Mattox.

Remember the indoor yard sale to bnefit Ecuador ministries this Saturday, July 20, at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 403 Park Road in Lexington. It’s 7:30 am to 1 pm.
