Feds investigate deaths from Goodyear tires

Posted

Federal regulators are checking out the safety of Goodyear tires.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration officials told the Atlanta Journal & Constitution the Goodyear G159 275/70R 22.5 has been linked to nearly 100 deaths and injuries but was not recalled.

The tires are designed for recreational vehicles but can be used on other vehicles.

They have been the subject of numerous lawsuits over 20 years.

These included a shareholder who alleges Goodyear executives concealed the truth with secret nondisclosure settlements.

The tires’ problems have only recently caught the attention of federal officials.

They told Goodyear in April that they were investigating “allegations of tire failures” and why the company didn’t recall them which might have prevented some of the accidents.

They said Goodyear responded with a request for documentation.

In a summary of its probe the officials said, “Among many concerns, claimants contend the Goodyear G159 tires were allegedly not designed for extended use at highway speeds as would be experienced during motor home operation.”
