Gamecocks look to build upon historic win

COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHRONICLE SPORTS CORRESPONDENT justin@blowfishbaseballball.com

Last Saturday, South Carolina secured the biggest victory in the Will Muschamp era in upsetting previously 3rd ranked Georgia 20-17 in Athens in double overtime.

A dominating defensive effort, led by the National Defensive Player of the Week Israel Mukuamu, allowed the Gamecocks to outlast the Bulldogs without quarterback Ryan Hilinski and move back to .500 (3-3, 2-2).

South Carolina now welcomes Florida to Williams-Brice on Saturday. Muschamp is adamant that Hilinksi will play Saturday and a win will depend greatly on the arm of the true freshman. These are my keys to the game:

Run The Ball

Gators and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham live on the blitz. If South Carolina can attack the aggressiveness of the Gators with Rico Dowdle and Tavien Feaster and run for at least 150 yards, expect a win.

Wreak Havoc

The major factor in last week’s upset was the pressure applied to Jake Fromm courtesy of Javon Kinlaw and company along the Gamecocks defensive line. Kyle Trask isn’t the fleetness of foot, contrary to what Dan Mullen showed in Death Valley last Saturday. Another good game from the USC defensive front will disrupt a Florida offense that has played well with Trask under center.

So now what?

Sure, South Carolina secured the biggest upset in program history last Saturday. It could very well be a turning point for the program. However, what can this team do with that win? Another top-10, SEC East rival comes to town now and you have the chance for yet another upset.

The season didn’t start how you wanted it. Fans have been restless, and until the Kentucky win, had all but given up hope on the staff and team. But it’s the dawn of a new day for South Carolina. Can the Gamecocks take hold of this new momentum and catapult themselves into serious SEC championship discussion?

Saturday’s game starts at noon on ESPN. The game can be heard on WNKT (107.5 FM) and the TuneIn Radio phone app.
