Gilbert wrestling claims fifth straight Region 5-3A title

Posted

Those wrestlers who started as freshmen on the Gilbert High School have only known Region 5-3A titles during their varsity careers.

On “Senior Night”, the trend continued as the Indians finished the season undefeated in the region after rolling past three opponents as part of a five-team match on Jan. 25.

In three victories over Swansea (72-12), Brookland-Cayce (77-6) and Lower Richland (84-0), Gilbert dropped a total of just three matches.

“This team's different,” said Gilbert head coach Mitch Hudson about his fifth straight region title. “I think every team has their own personality and this team has has been on some peaks and been in the valley. And we're still working our way up the valley. I think we're really good team and I think we're a team that supports each other and pushes each other. We still have some stuff we have to take care of, we're going to have a tough road in the playoffs.”

Gilbert will open the first two rounds Feb. 4 at home. It would then have to win twice on the road to earn a third trip to the Class 3A final on Feb. 11.

“The big one is staying healthy,” Hudson said. “This year has been all about staying healthy. It seems to be a statewide thing for the most part. Staying healthy, staying in conditioning, and improving the technique. You know, there's no days off. We’ve got to make sure we're working to get better.”

The Region 4-5A title match between Chapin and River Bluff is set for Jan. 27 in The Swamp. The Gators defeated  Dutch Fork 65-10 on Senior Night.
