Golf & winter go together

The Winter is just awesome for golf here in the Midlands, so let’s play.

Please don’t wait any longer.

The game of golf seems to naturally conform to CDC guidelines for safety while meeting social needs. Listen to quotes of a couple different golfers when asked what they like liked best about golf.

“Golf is fun and it’s something I can do with my friends,” according to Madden Grace Butler, 6.

Her 2 friends, who are 7 and 8 years old, answered similarly, but 1 mentioned friends first, then added she thought it was fun because it’s easy. Brilliant.

It should be noted it was 40 degrees when the interviews took place with these girls.

For those who have problems with our winters, just watch TV, the National Geographic Channel specifically. If you watch “Last Alaska”, your perspective on cold could change.

Also, if golf was invented where most suggest, the coast of Scotland, even in the heat of summer, temperatures hang out in high 40s.

Here is the kicker. Usually the cool temperatures are accompanied by both wind and rain. This can be really uncomfortable, but here is the first lesson today - dress for it. Try to keep your hands feet and head protected from the moisture and attempt to keep these body parts warm.

Here are some young players In the community that had success playing in winter conditions. Charlie Beiers and Ashton Eubanks placed 1st and 2nd in the boys division of the Coaches Winter Classic, while Emily Beiers and Alexis Hodge placed 1st and 2nd in the girls division.

In other holiday events, Chase Cline, 14 year old freshman at Chapin High school placed 5th in the boys 13-18 at the SCJGA Santee One Day. Edie Raine Hardee of Gilbert placed 5th and Hodge of Lexington 7th in the girls 13-18.

Each of our local recreation entities have special spring golf learning events for brand new players to advanced at all ages and skill levels. The Lexington Recreation and Aging Commission has a special Family Learning program starting in mid-March that has everyone learning and participating together.

LRAC registration will open soon. So visit https://sports.bluesombrero.com/lcrac/, then find “Athletics” or call BJ at 803-359-4048 (extension 240).
