Is this your grocer of the future?

Don’t expect to see this kind of Lexington County shopping any time soon.

Local grocers we checked have an eye on it but aren’t experimenting with it yet.

Amazon, which runs a giant distribution center near Cayce, is trying out cashier-less grocery shopping in its Amazon Go stores. It is looking at putting it into Whole Foods which it now owns.

After acquiring Whole Foods for $13.5 billion in 2017, it added grocery pickups, 1-hour delivery and lower prices for Amazon Prime members.

Chris Versace of Tematica Research says he expects Amazon will do more with its cashier-less technology.

Other grocers may be forced to follow suit.

“We should expect Amazon to be tight-lipped on its plans,” he said.

An option is to license its technology to other grocers and retailers. Another is to refine its system for bigger stores, people familiar with the matter told Versace.

If successful, it could challenge brick-and-mortar retailers to make their businesses more convenient.

The system tracks what you get and charges you automatically when you leave.

Versace said the technology works well in small stores but not in modern groceries such as its Whole Foods stores with high ceilings and more products.

Bigger Amazon Go stores could threaten traditional grocers disrupted by the online retail giant’s rapid advance into food retailing. The cashier-less system is in use at 7 Amazon Go convenience stores in Seattle, Chicago and San Francisco.
