Lexington County looks to close season on winning note

Posted

The shortened 2020 season will end Saturday for the Lexington County Blowfish.

What started with fans kept out of Lexington County Baseball Stadium the 1st 2 weeks of the season as part of a governor’s order will conclude versus the Savannah Bananas with the awarding of jerseys won as part of an online auction.

The Blowfish were involved in 2 Series Cup chases in the 2020 season. It was very successful in dominating the Lake Murray Cup Series against the Bomb Island Bombers and Lake Murray Purple Martins.

Lexington County went 11-2 against the 2 teams going into Wednesday’s final game against the Bombers and were 4-1 entering Friday’s game against the Catawba Valley Stars.

On Monday, Lexington County kept its slim hopes alive of winning the Southern Summer Ball Series with a 5-1 win at the 1st place Bananas. The Blowfish must win all its games this week in hopes of having a better winning percentage than Savannah, who will play 13 more Series Cup games.

The Macon Bacon will finish with 10 more Series games than the Blowfish. However, Lexington County can place 2nd by sweeping a home doubleheader Thursday against the Bacon and a win Friday at Luther Williams Field.

The 2020 squad did shatter the team record for home runs with 34. It also saw its contingent of college players from the University of South Carolina excel, led by 2nd baseman Brennan Malone who leads both the Blowfish and Coastal Plain League with 9 HRs to go with a team-high 31 RBI. Fellow Gamecock 2nd baseman Wes Clarke led the Blowfish with a .392 batting average and pitcher Brett Kerry had the most wins (3). Cameron Reeves of The Citadel was 2nd in the CPL in strikeouts (36) and Dutch Fork’s Ward Hacklen and Matt McDermott lead the team in steals (11).

The deadline to bid on the 2020 jerseys is Saturday. Visit www.blowfishbaseball.com and click on the link https:// qtego.net/qlink/blowfish .
