Local charter recognized for excellence

Gray Collegiate Academy, a West Columbia public charter school, has received 2 recent distinctions.

Gray principal Dr. Brian Newsome was nominated to serve as a member of the South Carolina Education Foundation Program.

Newsome is one of 17 professional and civic leaders across SC selected to participate in this program. It is part of a nationally respected leadership development program affiliated with the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, DC.

Gray Collegiate Academy was ranked “Excellent” on the SC School Report Card for the 2018-2019 school year. 4 years ago, prior to Dr. Newsome becoming principal, the school had received an unsatisfactory ranking.

The Chronicle’s social media intern Cole Stilwell attends Gray Collegiate as a junior. He loves the school “because of the flexible schedules, small class sizes, and number college credit opportunities.”
