THE CHARLESTON SILVER LADY

This lovely solid gold egg pendant was made in France in the 1920s. It is about the size of quail egg.

It is decorated in a very striking light yellow enamel, crafted through a process of handwork known as champlevé. This enamel covers it’s entire surface, back and front. When completed the enamel is very hard, not unlike glass and is easily damaged, chipped or crazed (crazing is defined as the thin little cracks you often see on old porcelain).

It is most unusual for it to be just a year shy of 100 years old and have no damage. This pendant was clearly loved and cherished and taken care of.

It is evident there is a high style, hand fashioned American flag gracing the front. A close examination reveals that the flag is set with European-cut diamonds, rubies and sapphires. This flag would have been added to the surface of the egg after the enamel process was completed. The flag would have been made by a master jeweler in Europe, as would the egg. It takes a very skilled craftsman to work in miniature because of the difficulty. Notice how the flag is expertly draped over the egg—a marvel.

Many of us watched the D-Day ceremonies last past month. It was breathtaking and inspiring to see these men and women who showed such bravery. It was wonderful to see their reception in France.

It is no wonder this pendant was made at that time in history to commemorate World War I. Over the last 100 years, pieces of this quality have become scarce, just like the men and women who inspired its creation.

I love wearing this pendant as it always gets the attention of someone and this allows me to share the story of it’s creation with someone new who can share my pride in being an American.
