Mailed ballot counting slowed down tabulating Tuesday’s primary results.

Many races were too close to call at press time.

Mail ballots delay primary results

Votes still being counted late into Tuesday night

Mailed ballot counting slowed down tabulating Tuesday’s primary results.

Many races were too close to call at press time.

Final results will appear on www.LexingtonChronicle.com as soon as available.

At press time in:

• Council District 5 in Red Bank and south Lexington, semiretired businessman Bimbo Jones had 1,435 votes and businessman Joel Tyson had 929 votes.

• Council District 6 in Chapin and Irmo, former council member Johnny Jeffcoat had 2,036 votes and political newcomer Charli Wessinger had 2,113 votes.

• In SC Senate District 18, Sen. Ronnie Cromer had 8,348 votes and Lexington dentist Charles Bumgardner, had 4,481 votes.

• In the Republican race for the SC Senate District 20 seat in the Irmo and St. Andrews area, lawyer Benjamin Dunn had 1,869 votes and businessman Randy Dickey had 713 votes.

The eventual winner will face Democrat Sen. Dick Harpootlian in the November general election.

• In SC Senate District 26 in the West Columbia and eastern Lexington County area, builder/real estate broker Chris Smith had 3,843 votes and business owner Perry Finch had 1,733 votes.

The eventual winner will face Democrat Sen. Nikki Setzler in the November general election.

• In SC Senate District 25 in western Lexington County, Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey had 5,930 votes and Susan Swanson, executive director of the Augusta Care Pregnancy Center had 1,905 votes.

• In a crowded race for the SC House District 88 seat vacated by Rep. Mac Toole of West Columbia, businessman Brian Duncan had 404 votes, Pastor John Lastinger had 431 votes, political consultant RJ May had 778 votes, retired veteran Eddie McCain had 261 votes and businessman Mike Sturkie had 1,007 votes.

• In State House District 96 in southern Lexington County, Rep. Kit Spires had 1,002 votes and his challenger, attorney Ryan McCabe had 1,081 votes.

• In the race for County Sheriff, incumbent Jay Koon had 19,078 votes and law enforcement veteran David Arnold had 7,048 votes.

• In the US Senate race, Sen. Lindsey Graham had 218,302 votes and 3 challengers Duke Bukner, a Walterboro lawyer, had 19,160 votes, retired businessman Michael LaPierre had 53,904 votes and marine engineer Joe Reynolds had 28,988 votes.

• In US House District 2. Rep. Joe Wilson had 34,985 votes and challenger Michael Bishop, mayor of Springdale, had 12,140 votes.
